With Easter coming in a couple of weeks, we see the unofficial start of ‘Fest Season’ which seems to bring with it some festival, celebration, fete or event every weekend. It’s not like New Orleans needs a reason to celebrate. After all, this is the home of the spontaneous ‘second line’ parade !
So what festivals do I plan to go to?
Well, I’ll kick off my personal Festival season by going to the French Market Creole Tomato Festival, June 13th and 14th. The activity centers on the French Market on Decatur St. in the Quarter. Three stages and lots of great music are the highlight. That, and the food of course. And the alcoholic libations. This is New Orleans, after all!
Next for me will be the Satchmo SummerFest on July 31st to Aug. 2nd. This will be centered around the old U.S. Mint at the foot of Frenchmen St.. This fest celebrates the life and legacy of Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong also includes lectures, an art contest, a jazz Mass at a church in the historic Treme neighborhood and a Second line Parade to open the festival. Three stages and lots of music on the grounds of the Old Mint. The locale is convenient as you’re a short walk from the festival site to Frenchmen Street the real home of New Orleans live music.
One of my favorite bands, the Shotgun Jazz Band with the incomparable Marla Dixon, is playing on Saturday. Personally, if there is one band to see (among many great bands, don’t get me wrong) its SJB.
Finally, I’ll be wrapping in October with the Louisiana Seafood Festival. It’s held on the festival grounds at the City Park. I went last year, and besides great line up of music, some of the best restaurants in the New Orleans bring their best Louisiana seafood dishes. Bring a folding chair, find a spot on the grass and settle in for a fun day. Did I mentions liquor? Yes, there is liquor. Again, New Orleans.
Now, these are the ones I plan to attend.
On the other hand, it’s only 15 days and 51 minutes till the French Quarter Festival. I hear it calling to me . . .
There is literally some kind of happening every weekend. You can check here for a schedule.
Which ones are you planning to go to? Leave me a comment.
